BETTY JOEL (1894- 1985)
Furniture, textile and interior designer
Sometimes called the forgotten queen of Art Deco, Betty Joel (1894-1985) was one of interwar Britain’s most progressive and enigmatic designers. In her short career, she designed and manufactured furniture for many of the iconic interiors of the era, such as the Daily Express building on Fleet Street, the Savoy Hotel, Hay’s Wharf on the South Bank and Coutts Bank, alongside private commissions for the likes of Winston Churchill, Lord Mountbatten and John Betjeman.
Her great nephew, Clive Stewart-Lockhart, has recently published a biography of Betty Joel. An independent art advisor, having previously worked at Sotheby’s and appeared as a specialist on Antiques Roadshow for 25 years, he is perfectly placed to recount the untold story of Joel’s remarkable career.
